About IITs

Indian Institutes of Technology

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are nationally significant institutions established by an Act of Parliament with the aim of fostering excellence in education. Currently, there are fifteen IITs situated in cities such as Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Delhi, and others, each contributing to world-class education and internationally recognized research. IIT alumni and faculty play pivotal roles across various sectors globally.

These institutions have three primary objectives: to provide a strong foundation in scientific and technical knowledge, cultivate an environment for freedom of thought and vision, and encourage personal growth and self-discipline to pursue excellence. This approach prepares students for successful professional and social lives, with alumni holding key positions in industry and academia.

IITs boast well-equipped laboratories, advanced computer networks, and extensive technical libraries. Teaching methods emphasize direct interaction between teachers and students, fostering an intellectually stimulating environment. Credit-based academic programs offer flexibility, allowing students to progress at their own pace, and the medium of instruction is English.

Courses offered by IITs include Bachelor's degrees in various engineering, technological, and scientific disciplines, as well as integrated M.Sc. and M.Tech. programs. Admissions, both for Indian and foreign nationals, are determined through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

In recent years, new IITs, such as IIT Bhuvaneshwar and IIT Gandhinagar, have joined the original elite list, commencing operations in 2008, with subsequent additions like IIT Indore and IIT Mandi in 2009-2010, further expanding the impact and reach of these premier technology institutions.
