About AIIMs

All India Institutes of Medical Sciences

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) constitute a cluster of independent public medical universities operating under the authority of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, part of the Government of India.

These institutions have been officially designated as Institutes of National Importance through legislation enacted by the Parliament. The initial institute, AIIMS New Delhi, was founded in 1956 under the guidance of Jawaharlal Nehru. Subsequently, an additional 24 institutes have been announced.

As of January 2023, twenty of these institutes are actively functioning, and there are plans for an additional four to commence operations by 2025. Proposals have also been put forth for the establishment of six more AIIMS. Widely recognized as a pioneering health institution in South Asia, AIIMS plays a crucial role in medical education and research.
